What is an Internet Protocol (IP) camera?

An Internet Protocol (IP) camera is a digital camera which transmits video via IP networks. IP cameras are the successor of analog cameras.

IP cameras often are powered over ethernet (PoE) and provide input/output (IO) and microphone capabilities. Some IP cameras have a SD card for local storage.

IP Security Cameras

For use in physical security applications IP cameras undergo certain certifications such as Ingress Protection (IP) and shock resistance (IK rating). Such IP cameras are commonly referred to as IP security cameras. Most security cameras have at least an IP65 and IK10 rating.
