Successful piloting with Stadtwerke Münster

As part of the Smart City real lab on Albersloher Weg, Stadtwerke Münster is piloting a solution developed jointly with Isarsoft to optimize traffic flow and parking space search traffic.

Real-Laboratory

Parking space occupancy analysis

Drivers in Germany spend almost two whole days a year looking for a parking space. Stadtwerke Münster is now using video analysis to automatically record the utilization of the parking space at the Nieberding Park+Ride parking lot on Albersloher Weg in order to make the search easier for drivers.

Isarsoft software is used to determine the number of entrances and exits as well as the total capacity utilization locally and in compliance with data protection regulations. The data is then transmitted to the city's parking guidance system via a Long Range Wide Area Network (LoRaWAN).

Stefan Kohake, manager for the Internet of Things (IoT) at Stadtwerke Münster, emphasizes: "We want to test how we can make mobile stations, parking lots and even entire neighborhoods smart in the future and how reliable the technology already is under real conditions.

Parking space utilization by means of video analysis

Stadtwerke Münster has installed the technology in the municipal parking lot and is working closely with the city of Münster to do so. "So far, the parking lot 'only' links cars and buses. We want to try out how smart-city technology can optimize or expand this service. The findings derived from this will support the city's plans for a mobility turnaround, digitization and sustainable, integrated neighborhood and urban development in equal measure," says Dr. André Wolf, Head of the Smart City Unit in the Department of Planning, Building and Economics of the City of Münster.

Street traffic analysis

Another camera provides data on traffic movements on Albersloher Weg, one of Münster's arterial roads. "Data protection is taken into account at all times, license plates or faces are not recorded, and the images are deleted again after a few seconds," says Wolf.

In this context, Isarsoft's software provides the distinction between cyclists, motorcyclists, cars, delivery trucks, trucks and buses that is relevant for traffic planners. This allows measures and optimizations to be examined specifically with regard to a changing distribution of the transport volume among different means of transport (modal split). Thanks to the data connection via LoRaWan, the evaluation can take place immediately and without additional development within the IT systems of Stadtwerke Münster.

What is Re-ID? Multi-Camera-Tracking in People Counting

Person Re-Identification, or Re-ID for short, is a computer vision technology that uniquely identifies individuals across different, non-overlapping camera fields of view. While traditional people counting often reaches its limits when individuals leave one camera's field of vision and reappear in another, Re-ID solves the problem of double counting.
